Yala National Park is open year round, but February to July is the best time for wildlife sightings because water levels drop and animals gather around the remaining waterholes. Leopard sightings peak between May and July. The park usually closes Block 1 for maintenance in September and early October.
A Yala jeep safari with Lasaa Yala Safari starts from around USD 40 per person for a half day tour, with 7 hour and full day tours priced higher. Prices cover a private 4x4 jeep, fuel, an experienced tracker and hotel pick-up. Sri Lanka national park entrance fees are paid separately at the gate.
Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and our guests see a leopard on roughly 6 out of 10 morning safaris. Full day tours give you the best odds because you cover both the morning and evening activity periods.
Morning safaris start at 4:30 to 5:00 AM so you reach the gate for opening, and evening safaris start around 2:00 PM. Full day tours run from gate opening until the park closes at 6:00 PM. We pick you up from your hotel in Tissamaharama, Kataragama or Kirinda at no extra cost.
Yala is home to Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles, wild boar, jackals, mongoose and more than 215 bird species including peacocks, painted storks and flamingos.
Yes. Free pick-up and drop-off is included from hotels in Tissamaharama, Kataragama, Kirinda and Yala. We can also arrange transfers from Ella, Mirissa, Galle, Arugam Bay and Colombo for an additional fee.
